What is Builders' Society?
As a student in either architectural, designer or carpentry education you can apply to participate in this year’s summer school and build an installation in a team collaboration with architects and designers.
Your application, including a motivation letter and a one-page document, should:
demonstrate your interest and/or expertise in working on 1:1 works
show your enthusiasm for and/or experience with working with wood
show a selection of your favorite works
HAVE YOU BEEN TO A HELLO WOOD SUMMER SCHOOL SEVERAL TIMES ALREADY?
ARE YOU STILL STUDYING BUT WISH TO HAND IN A PROJECT CONCEPT AND HAVE IT BUILT?
This year we offer a new, special way to join the program as a student if you've already participated in at least 2 editions of Hello Wood. If you can form a group of 8 team members with at least two of you in the group who has already participated in a Hello Wood Summer School, you can come up with a workshop proposal and build your own dream project!
If your work is selected, you can attend the summer school as an individual workshop, where Hello Wood provides all materials, tool and equipment to build your project,
Please note, in this case the same fees apply for you participation, however you get a unique chance to work individually with your mates during the 1 week event.
For now, please continue the application process as usual, once the Open Call for teamleaders is published, we will update the application info for You as well.

Hello Wood is an independent democratic educational platform that is constantly testing new collaborative work processes. It's an academy that challenges student-teacher, client-designer hierarchies at work. Referencing this, you may also include aspects that, based on your experiences, are missing from the current architectural education that could be complemented by your attendance at the Hello Wood Summer School.

We would like to make the application process easier this year, but we are still interested in your previous works. Therefore we would like to ask you to prepare a one-page document with the selection of your projects. We are interested in projects which are related to our summer school in a way and also we are curious what are your favorite ones.

This year the student application period falls between February and May 26th 2019.
If you apply earlier, you will get the result earlier! On the last day of each month we will send you the results IF we have received your application documents 1 week prior to the end of the month. For example, if you send your application on the 20th of February, we guarantee you that you will get feedback by the 28th of February.
This way, those who want to make summer plans on time will know soon enough whether they will be participating in the 2019 Hello Wood Summer School. Also, by applying earlier your chances could be bigger too - as the final deadline gets closer, the number of applications triple, and the competition grows higher.
We encourage everyone who wants to join the programme to hand in their application, sooner the better.
The final deadline is 26th of May, but as explained above, the sooner you apply, the better your chances are to get in.
WHY DO I NEED
Because our spaces are limited.
So you can work with and get inspired by the best groups.
So the workshop leaders get to know you on time.
So we can ensure the same conditions for all our applicants.
WHAT DOES HELLO

A real team work, where your design skills will be challenged and tested, but most importantly essential to complete the best possible project.
A chance to be part of the Hello Wood debate!

High professional standards giving you an extraordinary project for your portfolio and improving your professional skills.
A social experience you’ll never forget!
ABOUT THE TEAMS AND PROJECT LEADERS
Hello Wood’s installations will be realised by groups of approximately 10-20 architect, designer, art and carpenter students. Every team will have a workshop leader who is responsible for the design and makes sure everything goes the way it was planned. Each team works on their own project.
PROJECT LEADERS AND LECTURERS:
Projects will be finalised and built by the students along with the team leaders, based on the winning concepts proposed by the team leaders prior to the workshop. Projects of the summer school are based on the ideas proposed by professionals and academics applying to lead a workshop. The final project list and professionals leading the workshops will be published in April 2019 and shown on our website. If you are selected to participate, we will also send you all of these proposals, for you to choose which project team you would like to be part of.
Through the years Hello Wood proved to be a forum for international professional and academic collaboration, we had the opportunity to work with highly acclaimed practices such as Miralles-Tagliabue Studio from Spain, Katsuya Fukushima from Japan, Urban-Think Tank from the USA and Venezuela, as well as experimental studios such as Kosmos Architects or Architecture Uncomfortable Workshop, and academics from Columbia GSAPP, TU Delft, ETH, the Architecture Association, University of Liverpool, etc.
The program is a non-profit initiative, realised with the support of our sponsors, partners, volunteers and grants, however, we couldn't make it without your contribution as well, which is 450 EUR.
For opportunities to participate with a reduced fee, see the SCHOLARSHIP and VOLUNTEERING options below.
There will be lots of architects, tons of wood, an amazing chef and great musicians, everything will be given to have a great time, daily 3 meals and all tools and material needed for the workshop will be covered.

So if you complete your application during March, we give you feedback on the 31st March, and we ask you to make your payment by the 14th of April.
If a participant cancels up to 6 weeks prior to the beginning of a course, Hello Wood will retain 20% of the workshop fee for administrative and bank fees. If a participant cancels 6 weeks or less before the beginning of the programme, there will be no refund. This is due to the short notice to reassign the workshop-place.
Since 2013, we offer scholarships. Those who are awarded, pay a reduced participation fee of 250 EUR.

We will organise a communal bus to take every participant on the starting day, leaving in the morning from Budapest. So we ask everyone to arrive to Budapest by the evening of 14th July the latest, let us know if you have any problems with finding hostel accommodation in Budapest and we can give you more info on the options.
CAN I JOIN IN LATER TO THE WORKSHOP?
To ensure the strong sense of a cohesive community, we ask everyone to attend the summer school in its full length. If you cannot make it to the communal bus in the morning of 15th July, you can come to Csóromfölde later that day.
If you would really like to attend but cannot make it on the 15th, please arrive to Csóromfölde by the morning of the 16th the latest.
CAN I LEAVE EARLIER?
Similarly, we ask everyone to attend the summer school in its whole length, as missing the end of the summer school would mean not being able to enjoy the final product and the closing ceremonies including a group discussion on the results, success and theme of the summer school.
CAN HELLO WOOD HELP WITH VISA DOCUMENTS?
Upon request, we can send you an official signed Letter of Acceptance, proving that you would be coming to Hungary for this summer school, to help with your visa applications. Please keep in mind that some visa procedures tend to take an extended time period, so you should ensure to carry out this process before the end of the application period to be able to make a payment and finalise your application in time.
CAN HELLO WOOD PROVIDE ME WITH A CERTIFICATE AFTER THE SUMMER SCHOOL?
We can provide a signed certificate after attendance. You might need it for scholarships or references at your university.
CAN THE HELLO WOOD SUMMER SCHOOL BE ACCREDITED FOR ECTS CREDITS?
No, the Hello Wood Summer School isn’t accredited to count towards your ECTS credits.
IS THERE INTERNET ACCESS AT CSÓROMFÖLDE?
We do not have wifi access provided at the site, but you can access 3G and 4G in the area. The neighbouring manor has wifi access, so we can arrange for you to use it shortly if you have an urgent matter to attend to.
SHOULD I BRING MY LAPTOP?
You will not need any computerised methods for the duration of the summer school. To ensure the “thinking with our hands” approach, we in fact ask participants to leave their laptops behind to enjoy all the summer school has to offer.
WHAT IS THE SECURITY PROVIDED AT THE LOCATION?
The place where the summer school is organised is the property of Hello Wood and is rarely visited by any outsiders. We do not have any securely locked facilites to offer for everyone, but we can organise a locked storage for any valuables you have with you if necessary.
WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION SHOULD I EXPECT? WHAT IS THE COMFORT LEVEL?
The summer school is organised in a rural area, with accommodation provided by smaller huts scattered around the field. Every unit has 5 beds. They are comfortable but also only semi-closed, so you have to bring warm clothes for the night!
You can also camp if you’d like, as it gives you the most privacy and a real camp experience, also it can be the best option for cold nights. In this case please bring your tent.
WHAT KIND OF CLOTHING SHOULD I PREPARE WITH?
Summers in Hungary can be really hot in the daytime, so it is important to bring sun screen and comfortable summer clothes. However, it does rain sometimes and evenings can get very cold, so please think of bringing warm and waterproof clothing and shoes!
