COMPULSORY PART OF YOUR APPLICATION
I. MOTIVATION LETTER
In a motivation letter of maximum 500 words, please describe your interest in attending the Hello Wood Summer School, what you expect from it, your relevant experiences, why you would be a valuable addition to the Hello Wood community, and what you find interesting in the topic of this year’s summer school.
Hello Wood is an independent democratic educational platform that is constantly testing new collaborative work processes. It's an academy that challenges student-teacher, client-designer hierarchies at work. Referencing this, you may also include aspects that, based on your experiences, are missing from the current architectural education that could be complemented by your attendance at the Hello Wood Summer School.
Please include all relevant work samples, including images of projects, models, installations, structural experiments that you think best demonstrate your skills and experience in working with material. Samples demonstrating your experience with fabrication or working in a wood workshop are welcome.
If you have participated in a Hello Wood summer school before, you don't need to include a portfolio, as we are already familiar with your experience and expertise. However, we still ask you to respond to some of the proposed questions, as these are relevant to this year's debate specifically.
III. PRESENTATION TOPIC (optional)
Our summer school is a uniquely democratic educational platform, challenging traditional models of student-teacher synergies at work and testing democratic work practices. To promote student involvement in the debate, this year we would like to include student presentations in the lecture series. Please let us know if you have a topic or a design project you would like to share in a short 10 min presentation. Please describe the topic in one - maximum 2 short sentences. This could be your undergraduate or graduate thesis work, dissertation or student research at any level related to the Project Village programme of Hello Wood Summer School.
Note that you can have a successful application without proposing a presentation topic!
However if you do we are encouraging you to share it with us and become part of the debate!
If you would like to present as part of the lecture series, please tell us about it in a short email sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
This year the student application period falls between January and May 25th 2018.
If you apply earlier, you will get the result earlier! On the last day of each month we will send you the results IF we have received your application documents 1 week prior to the end of the month. For example, if you send your application on the 20th of February, we guarantee you that you will get feedback by the 28th of February.
This way, those who want to make summer plans on time will know soon enough whether they will be participating in the 2018 Hello Wood Summer School. Also, by applying earlier your chances could be bigger too - as the final deadline gets closer, the number of applications triple, and the competition grows higher.
We encourage everyone who wants to join the programme to hand in their application, sooner the better.
The final deadline is 25th of May, but as explained above, the sooner you apply, the better your chances are to get in.
WHY DO I NEED TO APPLY?
ABOUT THE TEAMS AND PROJECT LEADERS
Hello Wood’s installations will be realised by groups of approximately 10-20 architect, designer, art and carpenter students. Every team will have a workshop leader who is responsible for the design and makes sure everything goes the way it was planned. Each team works on their own project.
PROJECT LEADERS AND LECTURERS:
Projects will be finalised and built by the students along with the team leaders, based on the winning concepts proposed by the team leaders prior to the workshop. Projects of the summer school are based on the ideas proposed by professionals and academics applying to lead a workshop. The final project list and professionals leading the workshops will be published in April 2018 and shown on our website. If you are selected to participate, we will also send you all of these proposals, for you to choose which project team you would like to be part of.
Through the years Hello Wood proved to be a forum for international professional and academic collaboration, we had the opportunity to work with highly acclaimed practices such as Miralles-Tagliabue Studio from Spain, Katsuya Fukushima from Japan, Urban-Think Tank from the USA and Venezuela, as well as experimental studios such as Kosmos Architects or Architecture Uncomfortable Workshop, and academics from Columbia GSAPP, TU Delft, ETH, the Architecture Association, University of Liverpool, etc.
- Because our spaces are limited, we can only welcome 90 participants.
- So you can work with and get inspired by the best groups.
- So the workshop leaders get to know your previous projects on time.
- So we can ensure the same conditions for all our applicants.
The program is a non-profit initiative, realised with the support of our sponsors, partners, volunteers and grants, however, we couldn't make it without your contribution as well, which is 500 EUR.
There will be lots of architects, tons of wood, an amazing chef and great musicians, everything will be given to have a great time, daily 3 meals and all tools and material needed for the workshop will be covered.
- travel from Budapest
- accommodation on site
- work equipment and infrastructure
- daily 3 meals cooked by an amazing staff under a renowned chef from Budapest
