About the project

Our proposal is based on a speculative dystopian future, with the aim to think about a new generation, a social building, a new social environment, a self-sustaining system, a sustainable relation between humans nature and other species and rituals that allow humans to connect with body mind and its environment.

BRUGGA is a small community of witches and other species which remains in the earth after humans had migrated to Mars. In 2080, the earth is not fertile anymore, the electricity collapsed a long time ago. The land- scape is dry and desolate, therefore the scarcity of sources is annihilating all the species left. However, there is still some hope for Brugga community. From leftovers of the ancient society, they decided to build a tower with the hope to resurrect nature while producing at the same time an energy sources that cover daily needs.


Every day they go to gather remains of an old natural system and a society. They collect seeds and left materials found on the land that facilitate them to build a new self-sustaining system. This self-developed habitat is a mobile tower where they grow the living organisms that give them the energy to survive. The tower is structured with different levels that allow the growing system to function, while also providing the sources for them to survive. Brugga designed a tower which has its own life and has a symbiotic relationship with the community: in the way the system provides daily needs to the community, then they have to feed it, not only with the waste they produce but also with their own human materials or fluids.


BRUGGA is also really concerned about how architecture affects their psychology, and invite them to perform different rituals. Each space in the construction represents different connection and exploration of the body and the system, from the fears of the ground to the dreams in the rooftop and to the enjoyment and celebration of life in the heart of it.


The community is born from another kind of human beliefs. They feel as part of another equal species in the earth, therefore in not exploiting and domesticating the landscape surrounding them, instead they explore through rituals that seek to awake the intuition as a tool to shape this interaction with the habitat, using the body as a tool for experiencing but also exploring the interactions with natural materials in full.

Project Leaders - Tatiana M. Melo, Maria Roy


Maria was Born in Barcelona, she completed a degree in Arts and Design at La Massana and worked as a research designer at HUNCH Office. One year ago, She moved to London with a burning desire to learn and explore through the MA in Material Futures, and engage with her surroundings in order to fulfil her potential as a designer. Her degree in Art and Design greatly influenced her work and the approach She has towards what She does. That is, the relationship between art, craftsmanship and design has given her the chance to freely explore and search new creative languages that can be placed in a critical context. In her final project,

She wanted to gain an understanding of how our body is defined by social norms, and how materials, integrated with technology, can change the perception of the body. While still drafting her final project, I began to work as research designer at DOES work. During this time She was given the opportunity to focus on textile research, specifically on the application of wearable technology, in the prospect of pushing forward the fashion and textile industry in order to find sustainable solutions. Through her work for the Studio Ilio in London She was able to learn their special ways of production, such as creating objects from hot-wire extensions. Later on in the context of the Kiln Rooms ceramic studio, She developed various ceramic projects. She has found this material particularly interesting since its study provides insight on ancient practices and beliefs, and also enables the modelling of multiple possibilities from our own cultural imaginary.


Tatiana was born in Madrid, lived in Rusia and grew up in Barcelona. Three years ago she finished the degree in Arts and Design at La Massana in Barcelona while working as a freelance video camera and editing.
For the final degree project, she started De la Terra al Plat: a work focused on the design and construction of wood fire ovens of different kinds for cooking ceramics and or food, thought as a self replicant machines.
As she’s been granted by public institutions such as: Hangar, La Sala d’Art Jove and La Escocesa, has been able to keep on developing and making this project bigger.
She is interested in the community that is generated around the fire and the collective ways of building. Also the elements transformations, the recuperation and reuse of materials and the organoleptic knowledge: learning with the hands. 

“I believe we have to look back to think of the future because there’s so many knowledge in crafts, in the vernacular architecture and in the materials themselves.”

Currently, Tatiana keeps on building ovens, and is coursing pottery and traditional architecture, with a grant of the state.  


Tatiana and Maria have been working together for the past years in different projects and workshops that involve new ways of crafting our contemporaneity. Their aim together is to look at the past in order to combine old and traditional craft to refine the way i we live in our digitalised and technological world.
